Chapter Twenty Eight

‘He was supposed to be here an hour ago.’ Inspector Peter Martin began to pace behind his office desk.

‘So was Sharon,’ growled Detective Inspector Darryl Keller. ‘One of the boys has been waiting at the airport for 40 minutes.’

‘It’s just not like Dr. Dunn,’ said Peter. ‘Ruth told me he was extremely punctual.’

‘You don’t suppose the plane out of Cairns had engine failure or something?’ asked Darryl hopefully.

‘Will you focus Harry? Our meeting with Val Dunn is extremely important.’

‘I know,’ said Darryl, clutching his fingers together nervously. ‘It’s just that Sharon has a way of …..Well…..complicating things.’

‘She’ll be just fine. Stop worrying.’

‘What if she wants to cut my hair again?’ moaned Darryl. ‘She fancies herself as a modern age barber or whatever the female version of that is. You know what happened last time.’

‘Then it’s up to you to keep your hair cut short Harry.’

‘I thought it was short!’

‘I think the Mohawk suited you.’ Peter began to laugh.

‘That was pure and simple revenge for something I did.’

‘Or something you didn’t do from what I heard.’

Darryl unclasped his fingers and pushed back in his chair. ‘Like what?’

‘Be around…’

‘Don’t you damn well start?’

‘You work too hard Harry.’

‘I’ll tell the criminals and fruitcakes to slow down their crime spree.’

‘You know what I mean. Anyway, this will be a time for you both to get to know each other again. The Cooktown Resort is a lovely place. You can do the gym and spa together when you finish work. Have a massage and a pedicure.’

‘No-one’s touching my feet.’

Peter Martin stopped pacing. He faced the senior detective. ‘Got to keep the romance Harry?’

‘I’ve still got it.’

Oh yes?’

‘Anyway, what about you Mr. I’m so totally in love? I heard things are not all that smooth with you and Sandra at the moment?’

‘Did Ruth tell you that?’

‘No.’

‘No marriage runs smoothly, especially up in this God forsaken part of the world….’

‘You want a transfer back south. I can speak to someone Peter.’

Peter Martin was silent. His desk phone rang. He listened for a few moments and then slumped into his chair. ‘When?’

Darryl sat forward, straining to listen. ‘We’re on our way,’ said Peter softly. He dropped the handset back into its cradle and looked at Darryl with a shocked expression.

‘Oh God. Not the plane? I was only joking about the plane. I’m extremely fond of her…..’

‘It’s not the plane Harry. It’s Val Dunn.’

‘What about him?’

‘He’s dead.’

Darryl sat back in the chair and gripped the arm rests. ‘Dead? How?’

‘Apparently died in his sleep last night. The hotel people just found him.’

‘Killed?’

‘Just died in his sleep by the look of things.’

‘Who was that on the phone?’

‘The hotel manager,’ said Peter, still shocked.

‘Get him back on the phone. NO-ONE goes into that room! Ring now Peter!’

Darryl sprang to his feet and walked quickly to the door. ‘When you’re finished, I’ll be waiting in the driveway with the motor running.’

The trip to the Cooktown Resort took less than 2 minutes and almost cost a local resident with a disposition of walking on the road rather than the footpath, his life.
